I am not familiar with this author and was pleasantly surprised. The theme is predominately military science fiction (Fleet and Marines) with some social science fiction topics. It takes a while to adjust to the writing style and the heavy descriptive prose but once into the book it is hard to put down. There are both strong male and female leads that are likeable and supported by a fair amount of character development. The author is good at his craft and there is great length to the yarn. The read starts a little slow--give it a chance. If you are looking for large Fleet actions and constant action--this book might not be your cup of tea. There is, however, enough action to move the storyline nicely. I will buy the next offering in what I believe will be a wonderful series.

I always start looking for new authors to read with the 1 and 2 star reviews, checking the percentage of them compared to 3, 4, and 5 stars, and dipping into a few to get the feel of those who did not enjoy the novel. And honestly, in this case, those low stars are entirely undeserved IMHO. "Renegade" has excellent pace, is technically tight, covers the necessary aspects of sci-fi world building - people, place, power - in comprehensive detail, and is inhabited by fully fleshed characters given room to breath. Even the aliens have terrific attention to detail applied. Some reviews felt it was not 'military enough', and it's true that this is not an all-guns-blazing start to finish romp. Rather, it is a nuanced view of greed by those in power who wish to remain in power, and the consequences of this writ large and small. Still, there are a ton of battle scenes, and because characters die, and because it's not wall to wall fighting, those scenes generate tension and have an emotional punch you don't always get in pure play fight stories.Other reviews called out the politics as boring. Sure, politics is often boring, but when it's mixed with what I felt was Modesitt-lite ethics (refer to pretty much any L.E. Modesitt novel for illumination on this), it elevates the story beyond the usual. So, low-star reviews aside, what I found here was a wonderful mix of intrique, alien interventions, lots of blood and gore, and a core of characters to get behind and root for. It's an excellent read, and I've already ordered book two.

The Spiral Wars Book 1 Renegade finds us with the Lieutenant Commander - 3rd ranking officer - and crew of the human fleets most powerful starship after 163 years of war with the Tuvali, Krim, and Sarb has concluded with humans and their allies victorious. But what should be all parades and honors is suddenly interrupted by an offer of advancement to the LC and news their beloved Captain of the Phonix has been jailed - charges unknown. When the LC visits the captain in prison he finds himself charged with murder and what follows sets the crew of the Phoenix and the LC in command at odds with all of humanity and their allies. - Renegades in space attempting to find our who is behind this treachery and why.A bang Bang start to what promises to be a masterful series of space thriller opera and mystery. But what sets The Spiral Wars series apart is the underpinning on solid supports of history and a cosmology of sentience - both synthetic and organic where we begin to understand the nature of God in the endless cycle of beginnings and endings as creation is divided by destruction

I've read a majority of Mr Shepherd's Kassandra Kreznov series to know that he writes relatable characters, often placed into extreme situations, as well as writing great action scenes. This new series, placed in amazing universe; a displaced humanity has just concluded a centuries long war with an aggressive species. On the eve of celebration on humanity's homeworld, the CO of a celebrated warship, the Phoenix, is detained, murdered, which blame is placed on the second In command, LCDR Erik Debogande.Erik is subsequently detained, but liberated by the Phoenix's Marine commander, Major Trace Thakur.Escaping in the Phoenix, Trace and Erik begin to unravel a galaxy wide conspiracy that threatens to expose the fragile democracy of humanity's government, as well as relationship between allies and past enemies.I will remind, that Shepherd writes great combat and action scenes. With this trilogy, he can add realistic space combat as well. His universe's physics are believable, but compelling.A solid beginning to a trilogy that promises action, both ground and space, an intrigue, and a galaxy spanning adventure.A solid five stars. I look forward to the remainder of the trilogy.

This was an interesting read. Liked the idea of the plot.Especially after I came to the suspicion that this book was written after the author spent a night drinking coffee with friends spontaneously brain storming a story plot line, then waking up the next morning to spend 48 hours writing the book, after which hitting “publish” on the computer screen and going off to get some sleep. The book is full of inconsistencies, in timelines, in characters performing certain actions, in character development, etc.I found the description of the environment the characters find themselves in at times confusing to imagine. It’s as if the writer had the environment in mind but only some of it managed to leak through to the printed page.I am currently left wondering if there is something at fault in Amazon’s translation of the book to kindle format. As I don’t have the paperback version I cannot verify.
