This book has a lot of reviews because they offer you a free practice test if you write one and if you need a practice test, chances are you haven't taken the test so a lot of these reviews are coming from people who haven't taken the test.I took the test after using this book to review and while it did cover a lot of the test, there were still very very new things I hadn't heard of on the test that wasn't in the book WHICH WAS REALLY REALLY SURPRISING IF YOU ARE A NERVOUS TESTER.It didn't cover NPI numbers or where to find drug pricing.Also be sure to know THIS year's Top 200 drugs rather than any old year's because it's not always the same and there were a few that caught me off guard.It defines simple words and what may be basic math conversions but also gets into the technical stuff.Study hard because it DOES get harder to understand!Pros:-definitions of most common pharmacy/medical terms, occasionally broken down by Greek/Latin roots-split section by section of what's covered-practice math problems built into the section-listed drugs to go along with drug classes or hazardous drugs, conveniently on one page-cardstock bound-small so easy to carry (about the size of half a sheet of paper)-doesn't clutter information all on one page so you can write side notes in the empty space on about every other pageCons:-a lot of extra stuff you may not be tested on but helps you understand what the drug actually does (method of action) and may help you remember the basic function of it-Some things are worded in question form, which doesn't help-verbose in less technical areas-uses terms that you don't know in an early section that you don't learn until a few sections later-unprofessional drawings used-DIDN'T COVER EVERYTHING ON THE EXAM (NPI numbers, drug pricing look up, etc.)-some things you only learn once you take their practice test and look at the answer explanations(like there's nothing written in a section about the Orange Book but it was a test problem and in the answers, THEN they tell you what the Orange Book is)
This book is seriously worth the investment. I loved this book for many different reasons, but most of all it really prepares you for the exam. I took my pharmacy tech test and passed it, and it was all because of this book. Everything is to the point and it doesn't waste your time on any unnecessary information. I did purchase other books to study, but none came even close to the quality of information and the depth that you got in just a small paragraph. If you really want a career in pharmacy, (especially if you are going to go on to be a pharmacist one day) this is the book to buy. Its amazing!
You will pass your test if you buy this book. I got it and it really help me alot. I ended up passing. And I convinced one of my friends to get this same book and they also pass. This is a must buy! It's easy to understand and show alot of good examples of math problems.
My son spent 6 weeks to study these three books and passed the exam (First Attempt). He said the real exam was actually easier than the materials from the three books. He has just graduated from High School and had no relevant experience in the field. I purchased this book for 7 of my staff members to prepare for the PTCB. We reviewed the material in the book as well as material that I put together over a period of 8 weeks. Every one of my staff stated that the text was not reflective of the questions on the exam. Personally I thought it was well written (with a number of typos) and comprehensive. However, those staff members taking the PTCB exam said the text wasn't representative of the exam,nor were the practice questions. Therefore, given the high price and irrelevant material I would choose something different.
Definitely not worth the price. It provides you with too much information on some topics and not enough on others. The free practice test you can take is useless. Get the recommended materials from the PTCB and take THEIR practice test for $29.
I graduated college in 2012 (April), i haven't picked up a book since that time. well, several life experiences later i decided to pick up my career again and refresh my memory; which this book totally did for me. it is very straight to the point and is a easy read; however if you didn't go to school for this and or grad. and you don't have any experience in the lab you may want to get a side math book. Now i am studying from this book, and i will keep you posted when it is time to take state exam
I thought this review was very helpful. The explanations were very clear and the technical explanations didn't feel unnecessary, rather they helped me to understand the overall mechanism and the main takeaway that I needed to know. The practice exam was very helpful as well. It was also very concise and didn't take me too long to get through.
