This is the best book I have ever read - and I read three books a week and have done so for my entire long life. The topic could not be better.The writing is excellent and factual and the reader is spared some of the standard Catholic phraseology and judgementalism that can be so off-putting to outsiders. If you like intelligently written saint books, this is the one to get. Padre Pio was truly a holy man, truly an incarnation of love, hope and prayer. Reading this book about him is wonderful.
Book is well put together, I bought the paperback and it has held up well. As far as content, I find Padre Pio to be a truly inpirational man. Whether you consider yourself religious or not, this is an interesting book and IMO definitely worth reading, even if just for its historical and educational importance. I knew nothing about him until came across this book. The author is described in scholastic circles as having put together the most accurate informational biography about Padre Pio, so if you are curious as to who he really was and what he accomplished in his lifetime, this would be a good book to start with.
Padre Pio's life is made readable and somewhat understandable, so that he seems less of a freak than a more sensational focus on miracles would be. It's not an easy book to read because the concept of God giving unrelenting trials and crucifixion experiences--though with consoling visions-- is not easy to accept.But showing Padre Pio from the viewpoint of the people around him was a good decision on the part of the author. This made his life easier to imagine.
My heart broke for Father Pio and the way he was treated. I am amazed that with all the proof the Church had, they treated him more like a criminal than a man of peace and faith. This book makes me wonder what other people have this beautiful blessing from heaven that are still here on earth and how the Church is treating them. Maybe the Church (yes, I am a very devoted Catholic) needs to look on its own backyard before picking apart the others who God has blessed.
This book is beautifully written, reads more like a novel, and most importantly for me, is not too fluffy.
A very well written book that is very easy to read. It covers the full life of Padre Pio in great detail. There is also included in this book much eye witness testimony to back up the facts.The book also details some of the miracles that have happened which have been attributed to him that occurred during his lifetime as well as after his death.He was also constantly persecuted by the devil. The other monks who were in residence at the monastery could hear these fights going on and were frightened by them.The book also details many of the trials that Padre Pio endured throughout his life, especially towards his stigmata, which he bore for 50 years, and also details some of the internal politics of the Vatican during this period towards him. Padre Pio's strict observance to his vow of obedience was never shaken.The book also details one of his greatest achievements in that the hospital, The House for the Relief of Suffering, which he commissioned is situated near to the monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo and this hospital still exists today and is one of the biggest hospitals in Italy. It is the biggest in the South of Italy and serves the entire region of Gargano. What a tribute to a great Saint.
I was quite engrossed in reading this book about Francesco Forgione - Padre Pio's life. Francesco was a simple man who came from a poor farming village in Italy and was educated by clergy. Growing up he was a loner who spent many hours in prayer and was offended when someone used profanity. Francesco's studies and piety eventually lead him to become a Capuchin Friar and priest.I was drawn to the mystical experiences he had which started during his childhood. The Virgin Mary would frequently visit and speak with him. He was tormented by the evil one who would visit and beat him almost nightly. Padre Pio had many spiritual gifts; reading people's hearts, bi-location, clairvoyance, healing power and the ultimate was his receiving the stigmata.The book is written by a journalist who was a friend of Padre Pio and he gives insights into his simple and obedient life. He had a vision of building a hospital for the poor which he saw come to fruition during his life.Padre Pio was a holy man who, like Jesus, intimidated the religious hierarchy who caused problems for him and restricted his access to the public and his ability to celebrate Mass. Padre Pio knew that God's will be done and even under severe accusations and restrictions he was obedient and optimistic about the future, a man of hope.
Interesting overview of Padre Pio's life. Was the man a priest or a mystic? Seems like the evidence is mixed. His faithful followers believed both.
