There are some good interviews in this book with a hand full of musicians from the black metal scene, but this book misconstrues countless facts and many of the most important events in the history of the genre. Black metal's most prolific musicians (such as Fenriz) condemn the text. Many state that the majority of it was written from a very one-sided perspective without proper consultation of any of the musician's/person's true standpoints on the matters discussed.Who's word should really be taken? Some Swedish journalists looking to make a dramatic story, or the actual people who lived out the events and know the scene from inside out? I am actually embarrassed to have sourced this book once.
This book started off as potentially interesting as it traced the early days of Black Metal and its pioneers, though even then I had a hard time sensing whether the authors knew of the potential comedy by the extreme views of its subjects. In fact, this book could have become an intriguing exploration pairing Euronymous and Vikernes as two sides of metal mania—the rebel vs. the sociopath. With the sociopath, Vikernes, eventually murdering the man who may have been less ‘authentic’ but still a symbol of any musical movement of putting up a seemingly evil front more as a metaphor than a literal expression. But alas, from the coverage of the murder and trial, the authors got sloppy, similar to their care in the formatting of this book, and got carried away with Vikernes, who pales in personality to Manson, despite several attempts to pair the two together, to then delve into a long treatise on satanism and the spread of Black Metal. Perhaps the movie will present a far more interesting view of this subject matter.
The hundred or so pages covering Mayhem were fascinating, but the book runs out of steam around the time Varg is interviewed about Nazi UFOs for pages on end
Four stars for the amazingly deep, detailed coverage of a sub-culture subject. The first few sections of the book tell the story well, the latter parts pile on detail that at times is more than you'll ever want to know or take the time to read. As an extreme metal fan, I appreciated it but admittedly skimmed through the late sections on UFOs and Norwegian National Socialist policy. There are some interviews in here that you wouldn't get anywhere else.
An interesting indepth look at how the Black Metal scene began in Norway along with interview pieces with members at the forefront. It devolves into Varg Vikernes' personal idealogies along the way(to get a real sense of his views all one must do is watch his YouTube videos) -- how much of it is factual is hard to say as Varg seems to have denounced the book as inaccurate. You will find some sensationalism here, but overall it's still somewhat interesting. Fans of Heavy Metal will most likely find something enjoyable here.
Informative and shocking. Many metal bands talk the talk, but the Norwegian Black Metal bands this book focuses on walk the walk. While I repudiate the crimes these depraved individuals have committed, this book reads more like a novel than non-fiction because of their outrageous and criminal behavior that shocked Norway in the early 1990's.
....You just cant look away.This is indeed an extremely well written account of the books subject matter.Being someone that was there for the first releases of the Metal genre known as "Black Metal" (Venom,Bathory,Sodom,etc..), it was shocking to read this & see how vastly different people may perceive the same exact thing: what I always took as a borderline "joke",references to Satanism & the Devil as an expression of rebellion (ohhh,scare the parents & authority figures!!) or perhaps an appreciation for horror movies (that was my take as a teenager),these misguided kids from the other side of the world took as a soberingly literal treatise on giving oneself over to evil.And even more disturbing than that is how it morphed into a branch of neo-nazism(?) A fascinating sociological read not for the faint of heart.
Not only is this book an entertainng read on a genre of music, it's also a a well written history of Satanism in music. How a troubled youth finds an expression of the idyllic sermon of sin; black metal.
