This version is tried and true and we love the way Dr. Wile explains things so that the novice can understand it. Highly recommend but wish he would put out a newer version. The company that bought Apologia did update but changed so much of it and took out so much of the evidence of God that it is just not the quality I was looking for.

Yes, a class based on this text will give your student the credit needed to graduate high school and it will give a basic overview of chemistry. My daughter took this class through a well-regarded co-op run through a large local Christian university. She received 98 through 100 percent on ALL of her tests, which covered the entire book. Her teacher skipped NOTHING. She even earned more than 100 percent on some tests by acing the extra credit problems. She received a 98 percent for the class as a whole and a rave recommendation letter from her teacher. Sounds great, right? Wait; there's more. My daughter received a 600 on her SAT subject test as there were entire topics that were not covered by this book. Repeat: Entire topics in high school chemistry that were not covered. She reviewed before the test and was shocked to find huge holes left in her knowledge by the material as covered in this book. If you are planning to use this text to prepare for going into a science field or to springboard into a College Board Subject Test to get into a good college, you will need to do a lot of extra work. If you just want to check off the box that your student took high school chemistry ... meh; it will get that job done.
What a wonderfully, thorough book. I would recommend it to any chemistry student or curious adult.
A group of us homeschooling moms are using this text this year & let me tell you - it's pretty tough. You are better off getting the CD (especially if you have more then 1 high schooler) a lot of extras are the CD (which wasn't in any of the listing descriptions) I wish I had know before I had purchased the book.

I'm a fan of this series. Very in depth study. We've used this one, biology, and physical science.
I've taken this curriculum all during highschool and really enjoyed it and learned a lot. It does explain it very differently from my college textbooks, but sometimes you need it explained in several ways. It is EXTREMELY clear and spends whole pages on concepts that are easy to understand, but I kind of liked that. It annoyed most people but I could just read the chapter and totally understand everything as if I had studied and practiced problems for hours. He does dwell on Creation and things that are not provable by way of experiment a lot. So if you're not a Christian or a Creationist, it's likely to bother you. I'd still recommend reading it on the side if you have a lot of trouble with Chemistry, like most people do.
